The 2008 Honda Accord – Even Better than Before

Not content to rest on its laurels, the 2008 Honda Accord delivers with an extensive design make-over, inside and out. Although the Accord is already the second most popular car in the United States, Honda is pushing the envelope with new styling, more features, and a superior engine. The redesign is being viewed with intense interest by incredibly loyal Honda Accord customers – fifty percent of new Accords are bought by existing Accord owners.

This loyalty stems in part from the fact that Honda is simply a very good name, no matter what the product. From motor scooters to jet engines to the luxury Lexus automobile, Honda is a legend and a success the world over. Celebrating its sixtieth anniversary in 2008, Honda engines will continue to drive us well into the future.

Accord Styles

Honda has made a definite physical distinction between the Accord four door sedan and two door coupe body styles, with no common body panels or glass.

The Accord LX sedan is the basic model, coming with standard steel wheels and hubcaps, cloth seating surfaces, and an interior resembling the high quality of an Acura. Standard features will give you air conditioning, full power accessories, CD stereo, and adjustable steering wheel with audio buttons. For options, you can choose from Bluetooth cell phone connectivity, XM Satellite Radio and a premium audio package including subwoofer. The LX-P trim adds 16-inch alloy rims, security system, and power-adjustable seat.

EX sedans come with 17-inch alloy wheels, moon roof, heated side mirrors, air filtration, and a six-speaker stereo. EX-L moves up to dual zone climate control, leather detailing, heated front seats, optional navigation system, and 270 watt, seven speaker stereo. The 2008 Accord sedan has an added 3.3 cubic feet of interior space, moving into the EPA’s “large car” category, although Honda intends that the Accord will remain a competitor in the midsize car market.

The Accord coupe comes in a base model named the LX-S, with 17-inch alloy wheels. The optional V6 engine model provides an upgrade to 18 inch wheels. The EX model uses faux aluminum trim, while the EX-L model uses a range of leather detailing.

The Accord Powerplant*

Honda’s 2.4 liter, 4 cylinder, i-VTEC engine comes in a 177 horsepower model for the sedan, available in 5 speed automatic (21 mpg city /31 mpg highway) or manual transmission (22 mpg city /31 mpg highway). The coupe moves up to a 190 horsepower version also available in 5 speed automatic (21 mpg city / 30 mpg highway) or manual transmission (22 mpg city / 31 mpg highway).

New for 2008 is a 3.5 liter, V6, 268 horsepower engine. With an automatic transmission, the V6 uses Honda's Variable Cylinder Management, allowing the car to switch between three, four, or six cylinders, depending on speed, to conserve fuel whenever possible (19 mpg city / 28 mpg highway for the coupe, 19 mpg city / 29 mpg highway for the sedan).

Together with the Accord's four wheel independent suspension, using a double-wishbone front design and new rear multi-link setup, the car delivers its characteristic sporty drive and smooth handling.

A Top Pick for Safety

The 2008 Accord delivers a wider range of standard safety features. This includes front seat side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags, totaling six airbags in all. Also included are Honda's Vehicle Stability Assist system and active front seat head restraints. The safety package is rounded off with four wheel antilock disc brakes, electronic brake force distribution, and brake assist. This all boils down to the Accord’s rating as a Top Safety Pick for 2008 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
