    Ford Escape

The 2008 Ford Escape - America's All-Time Best Selling Compact SUV

Since the introduction of the Ford Escape in November 2000, over 1 million units have been sold, making it the all-time leader in US compact SUV sales. The Ford Escape’s popularity is based on a recipe that combines a lively V6 engine, comfortable interior, hybrid option, and extensive standard safety features. For 2008, the Ford Escape gets an exterior and interior redesign that adds the more upscale look now being implemented in various Ford vehicles.

The innovation that brings the Ford Escape to market is the same that created the legendary Ford Motor Company and fundamental manufacturing principles such as the assembly line. With brands such as Jaguar, Land Rover, and Volvo under its corporate hood, Ford has made sure that the Escape is powered by some of the world’s greatest automotive thinking.

Escape Models

This four-door SUV comes in three trim levels: XLS, XLT and Limited. The XLS is standard with keyless entry, power accessories, air conditioning, CD player, and auxiliary input jack. The XLT upgrades to 16-inch alloy wheels, foglights and automatic headlights, privacy glass, power driver seat, and high quality cloth upholstery. This is also the standard trim for the Escape Hybrid. The deluxe Limited trim adds leather seating, color-keyed grille and side mirrors, and auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Escape options include upgraded 320-watt audio, DVD-based navigation system, and moonroof. Optional Limited trim upgrades are chrome or luxury accents packages which deliver dual-zone automatic climate control and heated front seats, as well as reverse parking sensors. New for 2008 on all models is the use of recycled materials for upholstery, dash mounted multifunction display, and blue instrument lighting.

The Escape's Powerplant

All Ford Escape models are available with either front or all wheel drive. A 2.3 liter four cylinder engine provides 153 hp and is standard on XLS and XLT trims. A 3.0 liter six cylinder powerplant delivering 200 hp is optional on the XLT and standard on the Limited. 2.3 liter engines can be fitted with either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic. The V6 comes only with an automatic transmission. Fuel economy ranges from 22 mpg city / 28 mpg highway for the manual front wheel drive transmission to 17 mpg city / 22 mpg highway for the automatic all wheel drive V6.

The Escape Hybrid is powered by a 2.3 liter four cylinder gasoline engine and two electric motors that generate 155 hp; for all wheel drive models, a third electric motor adds to the power. EPA fuel consumption ratings for the front drive Escape Hybrid are 34 mpg city / 30 mpg highway, while the all wheel drive Escape Hybrid gets 29 mpg city / 27 mpg highway.

Comfort and Safety

The Ford Escape seats up to five adults. The Escape's front seats are well supported and comfortable, and a pleasant ride is augmented by new acoustic laminates for less engine noise. Cargo space is 29 cubic feet behind the second row and 66 cubic feet when using all available rear space.

Standard safety features for the 2008 Ford Escape are front seat side airbags and full length head curtain airbags with rollover sensor, antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and tire pressure monitor. In federal government safety testing, the 2008 Ford Escape received a five star rating for rear passenger protection and a four star rating for front passenger protection for frontal impacts, while five stars were earned all around for side impacts.
